So what exactly is strength training? How is it done? What does it include?:

  • Involves contracting muscles or muscle groups and utilising the muscles to overcome resistance.

  • Programs are created with varying exercises, tempos, sets, reps, resistance used and rest breaks.

  • Equipment varies from barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, machines, sand bags, balls and more.

  • Some examples of resistance exercises include: Goblet squats, Leg Press, Trap Bar Deadlifts, Barbell Military Press, Push Ups and Dips.

This is a lot of information to take in for people who have never done this type of training before, there's so much to understand about resistance training. So what are the best ways to get started?:

  • Start with 1-3 full body workouts per week, research shows this will provide the most benefits for beginners.

  • Start with compound (multiple joint) exercises.

  • Focus on form and ensuring that you're learning the movement and how it feels.

  • Don't overload weight to start, be conservative.

  • Ensure adequate active warm up and cool down.

  • Make sure you are taking rest during training and after training.

  • Track your progress.
