Getting Started in Running: Beginner Runner Tips

Updated: 4 days ago

With a new year starting, we've definitely noticed a lot more people out running and walking over the last week or so!

Rural road stretches toward mountains, lined by green fields and trees. Blue sky with clouds. Text reads: "Getting Started in Running!"

This is great, more people getting active and getting a daily dose of Vitamin D is always a good thing. But for those getting started in running, it can be hard. I definitely know what that's like, coming from a sedentary background when I first started running, I was incredibly overweight, and struggled to run more than 15 seconds without getting shin splints and out of breath.

I've progressed from that point to working towards an ultra marathon this year, and have developed a huge love for running. So here's a few tips that helped me out getting started when I was a beginner runner!

  1. You don't need to run every day when starting out, make sure you take rest days.

  2. Your pace only matters when comparing it to yourself, don't worry about comparing yourself to others.

  3. Focus on the effort of the run, different distances should have different efforts for the duration. It's much easier than focusing on pace when starting out.

  4. Walking to take breaks when out for a run is perfectly fine. When people say "run" they often are incorporating walks into it.

  5. Make sure you adequately warm up, hydrate and fuel your body for a run.

  6. Every run doesn't need to feel like you're going as hard as you can.

Getting a professional to help program your run for you, or using one of the many free running app programs available is a great way to get started.

And try to make sure you track your runs, and keep a running journal. It really helps you plan towards goals and monitor progression!
